The latest addition

It has been a long winter and I had the chance to read the book, The Year Round Gardner.  The author inspired me to want to extend the growing season at CHS.  The idea of extending the growing season is to plant hardy, cold resistant vegetables that can endure the cold weather and short sunshine days.  I am hopeful that before the Foods students leave this spring they will have had the opportunity to garden and enjoy the first crop of early vegetables.  Some of the vegetables we will plant early are lettuce, spinach, carrots and beets.

With the help of this book, the internet and my dad we built simple, reusable garden bed covers that go over the garden beds that are already in place.  The cost per cover was approximately $40 per box.  I was surprised that the metal (hinges and latches) for each cover cost so much (about $20 per cover).  I look forward to planting in a week or so!
Have a trailer and covers can travel

Snow melt soon so we can plant!
